Not far from the villages of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, Closerie Saint Roc lies between Camp de la Hire and the village of Monbadon, on the edge of the Coteau des Merveilles. This site was a meeting place between the English, who occupied Aquitaine, and the French who wished to reconquer their land which had passed into English hands following the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204) to Henry Plantagenet (marriage in 1152), the future King of England, Henry II. This small enclosed estate served to supply vegetables and wine to the soldiers of the belligerent armies. Many centuries later, Alex Anglebin (1807-1902), an ancestor of the Amoreau family and le Puy’s wine-growers, rediscovered these lands acquired by his family-in-law. He brought the estate back to life, growing vines primarily of the Mourvèdre and Colombard varieties. In his search for outstanding terroirs, Pascal Amoreau (14th generation of wine-growers) acquired the Closerie land in late 2012. He renamed the estate Closerie Saint Roc in honour of its history. Above all, Closerie Saint Roc was to provide an opportunity for Pascal and Valérie Amoreau, alongside Harold Langlais, their partner in this project, to revive a chapter of local history and to reveal their wine-growing talents through exceptional wines.

Closerie Saint Roc covers 16 ha around the property in the locality of Puisseguin. The altitude of this terroir culminates at around 100 m. With little rocky land, the soils benefit from a predominantly clay-silt sub-soil on a sandstone bedrock, which lends a high level of acidity and a certain degree of salinity to the wines. With an average age of 35 years, the vines are composed of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Harvesting is carried out manually and the grapes are seeded. Fermentation by infusion with native yeasts takes place in vats, without the addition of synthetic products. The wine is then matured in aged foudres for 24 months, without fining or filtration. In 2021 and 2022, three new « parcellaires », « Les Pins », « Les Noyers » and « Les Sureaux », were produced. Inspired by Burgundy’s climats, Pascal, Valérie Amoreau and Harold Langlais sought to create and develop new identities, obtained thanks to the wide variety of soils at Closerie Saint Roc.
